I am writing on behalf of a colleague who is currently
researching early twentieth century trans-Atlantic migration for
her PhD dissertation. While working in an archive in the UK, she
came across an "information" sheet that listed a person's
occupation, age, parish, and other vital data essential to her
study. Upon inquiring further, she learned from the archivist
that these sheets were forwarded to the colonies where they would
be received and used by "welcoming committees" to aid them in
their function of helping the settlers.
Typically, these middle-class "welcoming committees" were found
in larger urban centres, often operated by philanthropic women.
If anyone has encountered these information sheets, or knows of
any finding aids/archives where these documents might be found, I
will be happy to pass on the information.
Many thanks,
Jennifer Evans
