I am definitely not an expert in this field, and I'm sure others
will have more complete repsonses. However, I did pick up a book
in London called _Education and Class: Chinese in Britain and the
US_ by Yuan Cheng of Nuffield College, Oxford (Avebury, 1994).
It's a work of sociology, and most of the sources are other
studies conducted since the 1960s, but there are a couple of
general references:
B.L. Sung, _The Story of the Chinese in America_ (Macmillan,
1967) (also cited as _Mountain of Gold: The Story of the Chinese
in America_)
S.S.H. Tsai, _The Chinese Experience in America_ (Indiana U.
Press, 1986)
I'm not sure how great these are, or whether they are "classics",
but it might be a start.
Good luck.
