The Institute for Asian American Studies at the University of
Massachusetts Boston will be convening the first conference on
"The Status of Asian Americans in Public Higher Education in
Massachusetts" on April 25-26, 1996 at UMass Boston.
The goals of the conference are to: 1) assess the status of Asian
Americans in Massachusetts' public universities, state colleges
and community colleges; 2) identify concerns and issues affecting
Asian American faculty, administrators, staff and students; and
3) facilitate the establishment of a network of Asian Americans
with related interests.
The conference is open to anyone who is interested in issues
concerning Asian Americans in the public higher education system.
Topics addressed will include: tenure and promotion, Asian
Americans in higher administration, Asian American Studies,
research, library resources, recruitment, admissions, retention,
and quality of student life.
The opening plenary will be held at 4:00 p.m. on Thursday, April
25, and participants are strongly urged to attend this session.
Six reports will be presented on the status of Asian American
faculty, administrators, staff, students, curriculum, and
campus/community relations in the public higher education system.
On Friday, there will be panel discussions and small discussion
groups to address issues raised in the opening plenary. In the
afternoon, there will be several "action planning" sessions.
Registration fees for the conference are as follows: before April
5, $40; after April 5, $50; students, $15. The fee includes
dinner on Thursday and breakfast and lunch on Friday. For more

The Institute for Asian American Studies at the University of
Massachusetts Boston was established in 1993 with support from
Asian American communities and direction from the state
legislature. The Institute brings together resources and
expertise within both the university and the community to conduct
research on Asian Americans; to expand Asian American studies in
the curriculum; and to strengthen the community development
capacity of Asian Americans.
