Call for Papers
2nd Conference of the
PUERTO RICAN STUDIES ASSOCIATION
"Transcending Boundaries:
Fostering Dialogues Between
The Island and its Diaspora"
San Juan, Puerto Rico
September 26-29, 1996
The Puerto Rican Studies Association invites proposals for paper
presentations, organized panels, workshops, roundtables,
receptions, book exhibits, and cultural activities for its
Second Conference on Puerto Ricans in the United States and in
Puerto Rico. The Program Committee will give priority to
proposals dealing with any of the multiple circuits--
intellectual, cultural, political, and economic--between Puerto
Ricans on the Island and the diaspora. We encourage papers and
panels on a wide variety of issues related to the main theme,
including the following:
the construction of ideological discourses on the nation, race,
ethnicity, class, gender, and the diaspora;
the cultural and linguistic manifestations of Puerto Rican
identity
on both sides of the Atlantic;
the historical development, current trends, and future
directions
of the Puerto Rican diaspora;
the economic, political, and cultural implications of circular,
commuter, and revolving door migration;
the continuing exchange of labor and capital flows between the
United States and Puerto Rico;
the similarities and differences in the migrant experiences of
Puerto Ricans and other Latino and Caribbean groups in the
U.S.;
the establishment of transnational networks among grassroots
movements focused on decolonization, the environment, women,
labor, gay and lesbian rights, and other issues;
the building of linkages between academics and community
activists to further the well-being of Puerto Ricans in the
U.S. and
the Island; and
the applied policy dimensions of the back-and-forth movement of
people between Puerto Rico and the mainland, in areas such as
bilingual education, public health, social services, urban
planning, and
economic development.
Although proposals from all individuals and groups are welcomed,
we will make a special effort to incorporate younger scholars
and students in the program. We will also seek a balance among
representatives of academic, professional, and community-based
organizations engaged in the empowerment of Puerto Ricans in
Puerto Rico, the United States, and elsewhere. We will attempt
to include a broad spectrum of work from the social sciences and
the humanities, and encourage the submission of innovative and
interdisciplinary research.
Proposals will be evaluated by a team of scholars representing a
wide
variety of disciplines, institutions, and interests. The
members of the
Program Committee are:
