I teach social studies at North Olmsted High School, in Ohio. We
are a medium sized school, with about 1600 students, in a western
suburb of Cleveland, Ohio. About 60% of our students are college
bound. We are on the verge of a new curriculum which would
incorporate all world history, econ, geography in a three year
program, consecutive, as World Hist, US Perspective. Our students
lack information, especially accurate information about other
cultures and ethnic relations. I plan to work in a program of
teaching tolerance as I go..I am new in district at this point,
and overwhelmed by a new person's eclectic collection of teaching
assignments..the usual assortment of leftovers.
I previously taught 5 years in Shaker Heights, Ohio, a far more
culturally diverse environment. This is a bit of an adjustment. I
hope to learn quite a bit about ethnic history from this list, as
well as acquire many pointers to source materials, by following
the list. I have little to offer in the way of academic input,
but as I am among the front line of teachers attempting to
prepare students to enter post secondary institutions; perhaps a
bridge of communications will be beneficial to us both.
