Discussion Lists and Multimedia Teaching

One of the first results of the National Endowment for the Humanities grant, was the establishment of H-MMedia, an electronic e-mail list dedicated to the problems and challenges of multimedia materials for the classroom. H-MMedia is now an established and active list with over 500 subscribers.

H-MMedia As an interdisciplinary forum, H-MMedia provides a unique opportunity for those pioneering the use of new technology to share information and discuss implications. H-MMedia messages are also regularly cross-posted on H-Net's teaching lists, including H-Teach and H-Survey, H-HighS, and H-TeachPol, as well as on many H-Net subject area lists and thus reach a larger audience and spur additional valuable discussion. With support of the grant, H-MMedia has also commissioned ten web-based how-to tutorials to assist teachers in using new technologies. These will be published over the next few months as a lead-up to the national conference, "Envisioning the Future."

Discussion Threads about multimedia and teaching have been compiled from these discussion lists and demonstrate both the usefulness and scope of these discussions for teachers and scholars. A syllabus database is also under construction that will allow users to search by keyword for interactive syllabi and online courses. Interactive teaching resources have also been collected by H-Net editors and compiled by staff at MATRIX.
