Greetings!

I am conducting research on the Russian Federation's policies or lack of policies concerning environmental issues, including the effects of the Chernobyl disaster and information on Western Europe's stance on this issue. Any resources you can recommend would prove extremely helpful. Thanks,
Sam White

In response to Sam White's query on the Russian Federation's environmental policies: a few years ago, the Russians, apparently seeking some input on managing their natural resources in a capitalist world, invited some specialists in environmental science, law, policy, and history to a conference in Moscow. Some of the papers presented there were reprinted in the Journal of the History of Biology, vol. 25 (1992).

Hello,

Try Ecology of the Chernobyl Catastrophe. Scientific Outlines of an International Programme of Collaborative Research from Savchenko V.K.

I also have contacts in the Ekaterinburg Ecology Scientific Institute. I have organised a field trip for our students that will take place in April this year. There are some people doing research on Radial Ecology (which is one of the topics that we will be studying there). The e-mail address is: tatm@insec.quorus.e-burg.su Fedor kr. He will get you in touch with their man. You may tell them that I gave you their co-ordinates.
I am sure they will be able to give you first hand information. Good luck!
Karin

Re env. policy in Russia, a recent source is

Joan DeBardeleben and John Hannigan 'Environmetal security and Quality after Soviet Communism' (Westview Press 1995)

Adriana Petryna (at Berkeley, I think) is writing a book on the Chernobyl disaster

Just to clarify the information on the excellent papers in the J.Hist.Bio: these were the result of a series of six joint conferences organized by my colleague Loren Graham and Russian academic colleagues [not governmental], funded by the Macarthur Foundation.
