Subject: Environmental Political History PhD studies
From: Nichols Paul A <pnich@MM.EWHA.AC.KR>
I've been looking (admittedly via old-fashioned ways) for a school that has someone, anyone, who knows about Environmental Political History, (a history of environmental policy, international). I'm hoping to do my PhD in this field, but have not yet found a historian (though there are many political scientists who operate on the non-historical side) who follows this field. Hopefully someone out there can lend a hand.

Paul,
Not to toot our own horn here at WSU, but you might be interested in looking at our program, especially if you are interested in interdisciplinary studies. I teach environmental history and have a strong policy background. We also have one of the top two or three environmental sociology programs in the nation (only Wisconsin seems to have a better reputation), and several of the envir soc faculty there are interested in policy history. Our political science department includes several prominent people doing environmental decision-making and public participation, including John Pierce, who is currently Dean of the College of Liberal Arts. My own expertise in policy history goes only as far as public lands and water resources. My book, A CONSPIRACY OF OPTIMISM: MANAGEMENT OF THE NATIONAL FORESTS SINCE WORLD WAR TWO is in part a political/institutional history of the Forest Service and federal forest policy.

Paul,
Dr. John Clark, here at the University of Kansas is currently working on a book about international environmental policy. He has done other work on energy policy in the same light. He retires soon, but might be worth contacting.

You might try John Clark at the University of Kansas. He has a joint appointment in History and Environmental Studies and is currently writing a book on international environmental policy.
Good luck.
