X-Platform Multimedia Authoring

I've begun looking into some multimedia (MM) authoring packages for my
company and am interested in input from others. One requirement is that
the resulting presentation be cross-platform (Mac and Windows). The
authoring environment can be either, but Mac is preferred. It seems that
Macromedia's products (Director and Authorware) are the most widely used.
Are there any other cross-platform MM packages available? Can anyone
comment on the pros and cons of Director vs. Authorware (other than the
mega price difference)? Is it possible to "spawn" a process using either
of those packages - that is, launch another stand-alone application from
within the MM presentation and then return to the presentation after
quitting the spawned app? Also, is there a good online reference for the
Lingo scripting language? Thanks much for any input!
