Years ago (...I never thought I'd actually be in a position to *use* that
phrase! :=) ) our school had several 8088 PCs, and we successfully
used WordPerfect 4.x. It works great on machines that have no hard drive
IF you have two floppy drives (they don't have to be the same). What we
did was to create a bootable diskette for drive A: using "format a:/s" or
some similar command and then transfer the necessary files to run WP 4.x
to that diskette. This made starting up the system and running a word
processor a simple task, especially if you have a "work" diskette in
drive b: and include in your autoexec.bat file the following lines:
b:
cd\
a:\wp
This will allow you to run the program from one diskette while using a
second work or data diskette.
This will also work if you have only one floppy drive, but if you use a
separate data diskette you will be asked to swap back and forth from time
to time as you need to access additional features of the program (such as
running the spell checker, accessing "Help", etc.
One caution... make sure users exit using the proper command (<F7>, etc.)
or the program diskette (which CANNOT be write protected) will fill up
with undeleted temp files created when the program starts and deleted
when exited properly.
