Restructuring sounds so exciting to me. I'll need to give this some more
thought but I've always wondered how it would be to have the concept of
family or community integrated in a school. For example, most days kids
would come into their usual classroom, but once a week, or every 2 weeks or
monthly, kids would meet in their "families". Each family would have 4
students from each grade level (or however many you need to work out the
numbers). The activities you could have them do are endless. Peer helping
for one thing, community service, outings etc. Then as your fifth graders
"graduate" into middle school, a new group of first graders would come into
the family the following year.j The idea is that for 5 years, the kids
would get to know each other well. Does this make sense?
Is Karen Fuglie still a counselor in Bemidji? I believe she is HS but am
not sure. If she is, pleas greet her from Denise Cochran. That's all for
now, I must check my "counselor" mail...Tim and I often wish we didn't have
to share a computer, but things like this make me realize there is an
advantage!
Sincerely,
Denise Cochran
