Seeing an audiologist sounds like a good idea but they cannot always
help. I am losing my hearing due to otoschlerosis. I've seen five
specialists. One recommened surgery but said that being half deaf is not
severe enough for surgery. Another recommended a hearing aid that only
he was allowed to sell. The others told me the same story about the
surgery and gave mixed responses to the idea of a hearing aid.

Incidently, as an education professor I use my hearing loss as a teaching
tool for working with hearing impaired students. I've gotten fairly good
response on using it with my students.
