I am a professor of Biology at Ferrum College. I am chair of the academic
computing committee. We have an ethernet network on campus linking many of
the offices and labs and an additional set of modems on our file server for
student and faculty/staff call-in. We have a number of Prometheus (?) made
LineLink 144e modems that were purchased from Macwarehouse. We use them on
Macs to connect to our File server to get access to our email files and the
internet. Until a few months ago we had no problem connecting to our 28.8
Bocamodems on the server. The system administrator, concerned with
reliability, switched over to U.S. Robotics Courier v.Everything 28.8
modems for all of the phone logins. After that, the individuals with the
LineLink modems have only been able to connect at 2400 baud. We have tried
various init strings to no avail. Does anyone have any suggestions about
inti strings to try. We have used various programs to connect
(Macknowledge doesn't work). We try to use MacPPP and the connection works
but only at 2400. Tech support seems weak. I downloaded documents
supplementing the manual but can't find an answer there. Should we trash
the modems for this use? TIA for any help. Bob :-)>
