The search engine to use depends to a large extent on what you are searching
for. Metacrawler is a good general purpose engine and will ping sites to be
sure they are in existence. Because it sits on top of other engines, it is
weak in search logic however. (By search logic, I mean the options for
structuring the search so you only get hits on stuff you want.)

For scientific literature we highly recommend Alta Vista at
www.altavista.com. The advance query is particularly sweet. Also nice is
the ability to pull down a paragraph from the page with the hit.
