Any Hayes Modems on a Macintosh?

I was just wondering if one can use any Hayes compatible modem with a
Macintosh computer (modems sold for IBM compatibles - externals of
course).

It seems that modems for the Macintosh are more expensive than modems
for IBM compatibles. I know that you probably would not get the
software for the Mac (with the modem), but saving $20-$50 per modem
means great things for a small budget. The software (except fax) may
not matter if you are using the Internet anyway - uses different
software.
