Re: Video editing

At this point (which will have moved before I mail this) computers are used
a couple of ways in video editing:
1. Computers import video, edit in non-linear digital format, and export to
tape. This is wonderful, but the equipment is expensive: fast processor
computers, specialized input and output devices, huge, fast hard drives and
ports. Entry level for quality that matches VHS and ability to start with
an hour of video before editing is probably $12K, probably more.
2. Computers can log tape and control analog video recorders. this can go
from a Mac Classic, a camcorder and a VCR with IR remote up to very expensive
Beta SP rigs for over $100,000. In even the lowest end case, though, the
video is acceptable, say, for cable. Low-midrange (e.g. Panasnonic AG-1980
decks and a $1500 computer plus a couple hundred dollars in software and
cables) does a pretty good job with limitations.
3. Computers in line with any kind of editor make good character and
graphics generators and also logging and tape management devices.
Hope this helps.
