IBM Thinkpad help

I am a computer support person in a school system. Our Curriculum Coordinator
has an IBM thinpad 701C. She is very frustrated with it. It has a
separate back panel that needs to be attached whenever she uses it, which
she feels makes it very awkward (besides which it doesn't seem to stay
attached very well). She wanted to know if it could be configured somehow
to work without this added panel. So far I was told if we reconfigure it
it would not be under the manufacturer's warranty. We purchased it in
Sept. 1995, so we still have some time left on the warranty.

Has anyone come acrosss this problem and was there anything that
you did that makes it easier to work with..............she is very
frustrated and is about ready to throw this laptop. She needs to use
it constantly and is quite discouraged. Does anyone have any ideas??

Thanks in advance,
