Yes, I did. First off, I connected a little phone adaptor to the main
line that came into my classroom. It had a connector for the regular
phone and one for an 'electronic device.' ($14 at the time, cheaper now.)
I plugged my modem into the 'device' slot, the regular phone into the
phone slot. That meant that if a colleague picked up on the line from
another room, the line seemed dead on their end, and my end was not
affected. When the modem wasn't in use, the phones again worked normally.
(This was by agreement with my colleagues. I agreed to emergency hangups
and several times had to ungracefully log off.)
Next, I used the standard dialing routine for our phone system. In the
phone number, I added: 9,,,xxx-xxxx
The nine accesses the outside line, the commas cause the system to wait x
number of seconds each before dialing your data number (xxx-xxxx).
This method only works when your phones use the standard RJ11-4 (4 pin)
connectors, possibly the RJ11-6 (6 pin) as well, not the long 50 pin
connectors. I'm not sure whether it works with RJ45 (8 pin).
