Tim,
I'm going to assume here that you are using the built-in ethernet to
communicate with the network. If you are, have you tried the simple
things? (You didn't list them.) Things like checking the Network control
panel to be sure it is set on EtherTalk. Things like being sure that
AppleTalk is turned on (check the Control Strip on the desktop - click and
hold on the AppleTalk icon and be sure it says that AppleTalk is active).
My PowerBook 520c refuses to communicate with the network if I have had it
at home and have used a modem with it - it turns off AppleTalk every time I
use the modem because the printer and modem share one port. I just have to
remember to turn AppleTalk back on.
If you have tried the simple things, try looking at the EtherNet
transceiver when you have it connected and startup. If it has an LED
status light does it come on? If not, you may want to try another
transceiver to see if yours has gone bad. If the light still doesn't come
on you may have a problem with the built-in EtherNet stuff in your
PowerBook.
