Computer-to-TV devices

I've been noticing in computer catalogs devices to hook up a computer to a
TV through a small box, which I believe is a scan converter. They range in
price from around $150 to $300 in the catalog.

Question: are these useful for classroom use? the cost of a projector is out
of the question for our near-future budget, but it might be possible to
swing this. Second: what value do you get for increasing price--features,
better image, or what?
