Computer Use Policies

Kia Ora - Greetings from New Zealand

Before you flick on to the next message, this is NOT about the acceptible use
policies for the Internet or some other telecommunications network that I see
regularly on Edtech.

I have a senior student (Year 13) who has just started at my school this year.
He is a hacker, and seems determined to defeat the security procedures we have
in place on our Novell 3.11 network (50 User, 3 rooms, diskless, Windows 3.1).
Our network has been very robust, and is also used for community education
evening classes.

In discussion with colleagues, I find that other local high schools insist that
students sign a contract before being granted access. The contract basically
states that if the student tries to hack/vandalise the system, their access
will be terminated.

We've never had any problems in the four years our network has been in place,
but I don't want to be wise after the event.

Do other schools routinely have students/parents sign contracts before granting
access to computer resources?

How enforceable are the contracts?

Are there any sources of such contracts (I hate reinventing...) on the
Internet, or would you be prepared to send me yours?

If there's sufficient interest (and responses) I'll be happy to summarise back
to the list.

Regards,
Peter Sim (simp1@schools.minedu.govt.nz)
