Modem problems with 520c Powerbook

I have recently had an internal modem (Global Village Communication
Powerpoint Mercury) installed in my 520c Powerbook.When I log in to clear
my email it connects to the host with no problems but after one message is
received the computer either freezes solid or breaks the connection.
Similarly when I attempt to get onto the web using netscape it will dial up
the host at Auckland University ok but will not activate any links on that
home page nor connect with any other web site.
We have tried a number of changes to the modem initialisation without
success.Any ideas, advice would be gratefully received
