Do you mean that the computer is missing tha hard drive as in it's just not
there? If this is the case a 3 1/2 SCSI drive will work for you. You'll need
an adapter to hard the drive inside the computer and a SCSI cable. I
installed one into a IICi when I used this machine a server in my school. It
was a painless installation. Also does your machine have the cache card?
This card will improve the performance of your machine. You should be able
to pick one up used. To install the system software onto the new drive start
with the disk tools to format the disk, then use the system installer (disk
one) to reinstall the system.

As for rebuilding the desktop, just how down the command (propeller) and
option key (I may be wrong on this since I don't have a mac at home) while
the machine restarts. If I'm correct the machine will ask if you want to
rebuild the desktop.

Hope this helps
