Instead of using some type of screening software have you considered using
a proxy server. The proxy server software is available from Netscape
through JDL Technologies (800-533-3969) and has several advantages over
screening software. To use a proxy server you select the URL you want the
students to log on to (just like selecting titles for books in you
library). When students log on they log into the proxy server and are only
allowed to go to the sites you have chosen. As for maintenance goes it is
very simple. If you have to make an change in a URL instead of having to
change it on every machine you only make the change at the server. In
addition you can cache your most popular sites and students will be able to
access them a speed close to which you access files over you lan rather
then the slower Internet speeds. To me this is the most important
advantage of a proxy server. The teachers really like it when all 30
students in a class can all log into the same site with in about 90
seconds.
