The following is a synopsis of a survey of Canadian media Internet use
conducted by Ernst & Young and Canada NewsWire Ltd. in June 1995. The
objective of the survey was to determine the extent to which journalists
use the Internet; where the Net is taking them; and when they
will be entering the on-ramp.

During the next five years there will be major changes in press release
distribution, according to the respondents. Survey participants say that by
the year 2000, they expect the first choice for the distribution of all
press releases will be the Internet (41 per cent).

There are differences, however, depending on the type of media outlet.

For example, broadcast organizations say they expect to receive news
releases in the next five years via:

Newswire: 42 per cent
Fax: 27 per cent
Internet: 18 per cent

Daily newspapers expect to receive news releases in the next five years via:

Internet: 46 per cent
Newswire: 36 per cent
Fax: 14 per cent

Trade magazines expect to receive news releases in the next five years via:

Internet: 45 per cent
Fax: 25 per cent
Newswire: 15 per cent
