Apple IIes, Digicard, and repeating letters

I am running 25 Apple IIes networked with a digicard interface.
This lab has been operating with little or no maintenance for about 9 years.
Just recently we have had trouble with letters repeating automatically. I
have tried the software (we run Bank Street Writer) and that has no effect.
I have also tried two stand alones in the same lab. They are not doubling
letters. I have no idea how this started or what to do about it. Any
suggestions? It's driving my fifth graders crazy.
