Master Boot Record

I think I have a virus problem that affects the master boot record. The
computer works fine one day and the next it gives a "non-system disk or disk
error" I run fdisk to view partitions and it is scrambled. Once this happens
the only solution I have found is to run "fdisk /mbr"

I have tried to just re-partition the drive then format /s but it still won't
boot.

What can anyone tell me about the master boot record. What does it do exactly.

can anyone recommend a good virus protection program. One that I can take
around on diskette from machine to machine (not having to load it to the HD).

How about a disaster recovery program to get the information off an HD that
does not look partitioned or has been re-partitioned
