When I take NETSCAPE NewsFAT out of my Netsccape preferences folder and
trash it, I stop getting crashes and also I stop getting b-catalog tree
error messages on Norton. I think Netscape replaces this pref. on startup
and it stays fine for a while. The I get errors again and remove it
again.

Good luck. Let me know if this works for you.
