This was my original problem:

In other words, I couldn't open up my Clarisworks or Microsoft Word files
without opening up the application first.
I received many suggestions, but here is the solution which I discovered
myself, quite by accident:
I took the Clarisworks application out of the Clarisworks folder and dropped it
onto the desktop. Then I dragged the Clarisworks application from the desktop
and put it back into its folder. Simple as that.
Now I can click on any Clarisworks file to open the Clarisworks application. I
had equal success by doing the same with Microsoft Word
