We have an old IBM PS2/30 (8086 and never used) in the back of the
lab, maximum 640k on the motherboard. I have used above board memory
expansion that plugs into the slots of an 8086 or 80286 to increase
EMS or XMS to two or more megs. The extra memory has limited
application and usually needs to be supported directly by your client
software. The operating system can not deal with it directly on the
old machines, and you don't have Windows either. On a 286 the extra
may be used to load dos high, or as a software cache.
