Doctoral Degrees via Distance Learning: Are They Credible?

I've noticed several postings asking about doctoral degrees through
distance learning alternatives. Having heard both pros and cons
about doctorates through this mechanism, I wonder if any of you have
any experience with them? Specifically, are any of you pursuing such a
degree? If any of you have (or are soon to be awarded) such a degree,
could you tell me your experience at job-hunting time? Have you had
any problems regarding their perceived credibility? Especially with
respect to higher education, have institutions to which you have
applied made any comments one way or another insofar as your terminal
academic credential is concerned? Are they regarded as comparable to
doctorates received through more traditional means? Please feel free to
contact me directly. NOTE: Although I might summarize your comments in
conversations with colleagues, I will treat each of your individual
responses as a confidence.
