I spec new classrooms and construction audio-visual for my dept. and
emphasize the correct screen size and type, lighting control and more.
Problem I have is the Physical Plant and architects politely ignore
almost everything submitted to them. I know the Physical Plant doesn't
seriously consider my specs because of questions that come up as
projects progress. I'm purposely denied direct access to architects
unless I'm fortunate enough to run across a good AV architectural
contact who doesn't mind breaking the rules to insure a better project.
You probably know the routine: project designed ideally, runs over
budget, AV provisions slashed to save bucks and plunge on. [We all know
audio visual is the largest expense, don't we?] The building/room may be
dysfunctional, but isn't it pretty? Media Services will retrofix the
problem later with its funds, right.
I get big boxes with four walls, a low ceiling, a floor, fluorescent
lighting (screen spill included free), lots of outside light with
inadequate or no control and the Physical Plant and architects consider
their job done. Undesirable seating is often oriented improperly for the
space. A chalkboard and a 60"x60" matte white pull down screen are
provided regardless of the classroom dimensions or requests for
whiteboards.
My dept. is cloutless politically and socially. We get a small
percentage for equipment in new construction/renovation but almost no
support/cooperation regarding the basic design/construction of
classrooms snd lecture halls. How do you get around the problem of
AV-multimedia being the last consideration in any project? Or is this a
problem for your dept.?
