While the projectors are important, and you try your best to purchase the
one for your use and budget. Equally important are what I feel are the two
most overlooked factors. Room light control and the screen which is used in
the room.
Both DaLite and Stewart make screen material especially for video/data
projection. I use a screen made by Dalite call "Hi-Power" for some of our
data projectors. It's relatively cheap and since one needs to purchase a
screen, why not include it in the budget. The second screen is by Stewart
called Videomatte 2000. It appears to have a slightly higher gain than the
"Hi-power" but does not exhibit the light fall off from the sides that the
DaLite seems to have.
The DaLite is a roll-down screen, the Stewart is a fixed frame screen
although Stewart has a roll-down version of the Videomatte 2000.
We spec shades and blinds in all of our classroom renovations, specifically
because of light infiltration. We then control the amount of light onto the
screen by using standard lighting that forces the light down and not toward
the screen.
Recently we have incorporated controlled lighting upon the presentation area
to bring the presenter into the light and more visible to the class.
I would welcome further discussion on this topic for the better
understanding of this group.
