Hello Everyone,

During the summer, our traffic is usually a bit lower, so
I'll be trying to keep up. We're about 100 messages behind
now. I'm hoping a couple of volunteers will be able to help
edit this summer, so I can take the occasional weekend or
week off. If you have lots of time during the summer and want
to help with EDTECH, please let me know, as we expect to be
doing projects with editing, the WWW, and book and software
reviews.

As we move into the summer season, we've had a lot of bouncing
mail (people whose accounts expire at the end of the school
year). During one week of May, we received over 13,000 bounced
pieces of mail. So we've turned on more aggressive automatic
deleting, as we don't have volunteers to handle it. We removed
many people whose mail was returned to sender. Also Listserv now
automatically removes anyone from whom we receive more than 100 bounces,
or whose bounces continue for more than 5 or 6 days.

We're currently showing 3291 EDTECH subscribers from at least 46
countries, plus our Usenet News bit.listserv.edtech and other Bulletin
Board readers.

If you're automatically removed from EDTECH while on vacation,
or while your mail computer is being serviced, please just sign
back on. (See the commands below.) It is also helpful if you
use the SET EDTECH NOMAIL command to temporarily turn off your
mail while you are away. You can catch up when you get back
by visiting the EDTECH archives at:
http://h-net.msu.edu/~edweb

Please remember that EDTECH doesn't accept commercial postings.
Unfortunately the volunteers that run EDTECH are not able to
extensively debate the status of an individual posting with
commercial subscribers, though cordial and civil inquiries
will usually be responded to. The fact that something
that appears to be somewhat commercial sometimes gets posted,
for whatever reason, does not imply that the policy has changed,
or that any additional commercial postings will be accepted.

EDTECH also doesn't post flames. The editor probably won't
respond to them either.

For those of you who need a refresher--to manage your
subscription, write to LISTSERV@MSU.EDU

Commands:
SUB EDTECH firstname lastname to join the list
SIGNOFF EDTECH to leave the list
SET EDTECH DIGEST to receive EDTECH as a daily digest
SET EDTECH NOMAIL to temporarily stop the mail
SET EDTECH MAIL to end DIGEST or NOMAIL
REGISTER firstname lastname to change your name with LISTSERV

If you have trouble with using these commands, just write to the
editor at 21765EDT@MSU.EDU

A couple of reminders. EDTECH requires that every message be signed
in the body of the message (usually at the bottom) with full name and
e-mail address. No messages are posted without this information.

People using Eudora, Exchange and other offline mail processors should
be careful not to make their lines too long and also not to send
special characters, graphics, etc. to EDTECH. These tend to wrap or
arrive in encoded and not postable formats. We can't post encoded
documents, programs, etc.

EDTECH is run by volunteers who do a variety of work the editing
the list, reviewing books and software and working on the WWW site
and FAQ. Others are welcome! Please let the editor know if you'd
like to help out. If you did volunteer, but somehow didn't
get a response, please write again. Sometimes, due to volume, we
may miss someone.

Thanks again for your good wishes and all the useful messages during
the past few weeks.
