The Instructional Technology Program at the University of Houston--Clear
Lake is currently in the process of developing a performance assessment
system for students that will soon take the place of comprehensive exams.

The system will require students to develop and present a portfolio which
demonstrates proficiency in a set of performance standards that we feel are
essential for students obtaining a master's degree in Instructional
Technology.

One of the first steps we are taking to develop this system is to revise
our current set of exist competencies. To help us in our efforts, we are
asking institutions with instructional/educational technology programs to
send us relevant documentation. More specifically, would please send us:

(1) a list of core competencies, terminal objectives, performance standards
or learning outcomes (In other words, anything that describes what students
should know and be able to do at the completion of their coursework and/or
program of study);

(2) degree plans or any other documents that list and/or describe courses
to be taken by master's degree students and doctoral degree students; and

(3) if you have a similar assessment system in place, any documentation
that describes your system.

Paralleling these efforts, we are also asking school districts, community
colleges, businesses and industries that employ instructional
designers/technologists to help us define essential entry level
proficiencies. If you: (1) provide professional training in
Instructional/Educational Technology or Instructional Systems; (2) employ
instructional designers and/or technologists; or (3) are a practicing
Instructional Designer/Technologist; please send me a list of skills and
knowledge that you feel are essential for success. In addition, if you know
of any articles or publications that identifies IT related competencies,
please let me know.

After synthesizing the information obtained from these requests for
information, we plan to assess the validity of our performance standards
with professional preparation programs and with potential employers. At
present, half of our students go to work for business and industry or
government agencies, and the other half work for public schools or
institutes of higher education (primarily community colleges).

For participating in this project, we will be happy to send you a copy of
our results. Please send all documentation to:
