I'm not connected with any school, but I have been using a pair of
Gateway 2000 PC's (33 MHz 486's) for software development for over
three years. I open these machines up fairly often to change add-on
cards ... an act which can cause problems if the motherboard, case,
etc. are not fairly rugged.
I have had only one problem with these two machines: one has a
cooling fan which doesn't always start spinning when the machine is
powered on. Other than that, these machines have been fine. Both of
them have IBM Boot Manager; I run both OS/2 and Windows 3.1
Gateway had some quality problems around mid '93 when they were
growing rapidly. I would hope that they've put their "growing pains"
behind them by now.
Good luck.
