This summer marks the 20th anniversary of the Mars Viking Landings and
1996 will see new American and Russian missions to the Red Planet. Many
educators across the country are gearing up for a special focus on Mars
during the upcoming school year.

include representatives from each state, many of whom have actively
participated in the Passport to Knowledge (PTK) projects over the past

DU will also have a representative at the physical conference to relay our
questions to the speakers.
To find out more about the Conference itself, see:
http://quest.arc.nasa.gov/marsconf/
For those with no web access, DU will provide constantly updating webslate
coverage in the MOO of the proceedings which will be transcribed as they
occur at the conference site. For those of you who have web access you
may access it via the NASA address given above. Following the
presentations there will be discussions and during Q & A sessions, our DU
representative at the Washington DC site will relay our questions to the
presenters.
Be sure to explore the rooms around the main foyer as a number of our
students and teachers have created objects, both webbed and non-webbed,
that relate to the Mars theme.
DU MOO: (telnet) moo.du.org 8888 (for most systems) (telnet) moo.du.org
/port=8888 (for vaxes) (telnet) moo.du.org:8888 (for a few odd birds). If
the name doesn't work try our i.p. number: 128.18.101.106.
NOTE: the port number (8888) is absolutely "required". Otherwise you will
reach the logon to our server, rather than the MOO.
You can get to our various web gateways from our web site by following the
links called "Visiting DU MOO" Anyone using the Java link MUST have the
right version of Netscape and I suggest you change the percentage of
screen the window will take up to 50 or 60% before logging on. I
understand that you can use Java from a MacIntosh but am not sure how
well. It does require a specific recent version of Netscape. People using
the web gateway without the Java client MUST have a telnet window open as
well. Type: @webpass after you are logged into the MOO via telnet and it
will give you the password to put into the web gateway.
If you do not know what a MOO is, please check out our web site at:
http://www.du.org. If you would like an information packet about the MOO
with a list of basic commands, contact jeanne@du.org.
We ask that all those who do not yet have a character on DU and wish to
join us to request a temporary ID to use for the conference. If you wish
to go ahead and get a permanent one, that is fine, but we find it is much
less confusing to people to actually have a name rather than be called
Opal_Guest or something similar. To get a temporary account, send email
to: ctallis@Primenet.com.
If you are not familiar with MOOs, we are offering free MOObasics classes on
Thursday, July 18th at two different times.
3 pm Eastern
9 pm Eastern
To register for a class, contact CindyT at ctallis@Primenet.com
