The applications are pretty self-explanatory, Transparency turns a color in
your GIF file transparent (I think GIFConverter and others can do the same
thing) and GIF Animator lets you create animated GIF files from multiple
images.

I would hesitate to use Basic these days in an intro class. It's easy to
develop a lot of bad habits with Basic. For pure teaching purposes Pascal
is better, and for practicality and applicability C and C++ are much more
marketable.
