This is not an uncommon problem. We see it quite regularly when
we conduct Internet teacher training to use PPP/Internet dial-in.
Sounds like an Initialization string problem. When
you set up FreePPP and filled in your dialing information in the
CONFIGURATION screen you were asked for an INIT string...U.S.Robotics
28.8modem manuals recommend AT&F1 as the init string, however, in
some cases we have found that other strings (i.e., AT&F, or AT&F1&K3,
in some cases AT&F1&k0, or AT&F1&k3&D0 etc) needed to be used. If you
are using USR's Mac-N-Fax modem we found that a string of
AT&F&B1&H1&R2&D0S277=48 sometimes works. You're experiencing a "line
drop" which usually means the init string needs adjusting. It can also
mean on some modems the need for a special "hardware handshaking" cable,
to control the data flow between the computers and modems,
but that comes standard on the 28.8 U.S.Robotics.
Hope this helps.
