School-based training of students to do network administration

As part of the National School Network Testbed activities, a group of us at
UC Irvine are compiling for the educational community at large some
emulatable examples of activities that link schools with their local
communities and where telecommunications plays a significant role (or where
it *could* if the program organizers were more aware of its uses!). For
example, we will describe a number of class projects that develop knowledge
of local community history through interviewing of community members which
are then shared with the community via the World Wide Web.

One type of program we are interested in describing, and for which we lack
useful exemplars, is a program where classes of students are given
systematic training in computer network management and troubleshooting and
then are given internships in local businesses, non-profits, or public
agencies to help them establish, maintain, or expand their computer
networks.

If you are aware of any such programs at one or more secondary schools,
please e-mail a summary of what you know and the name and e-mail address of
another knowledgeable contact person (& phone #, if known), to myself or to
Philip Coates (pccoates@uci.edu; 714-824-1230). [We may not be members of
your discussion list, so a response to the list might not reach us.]

Thanks very much,

Hank Becker
