Mac PPP is driving me mad!!!

I am usually quite adept at handeling most situations that occur on my mac,
but trying to get PPP to work is making me insane.

I have a Performa 475 running 7.01P and a US Robotics Sportster 28.8 Modem.
I am familiar with MacTCP using a direct Ethernet connection, so I know
about gateways, name servers, ect. I downloaded FreePPP 2.05rf from the
net, and installed it according to the instructions.

When I request FreePPP to open a connection, it dials, picks up the line,
takes my login and password, sends a message saying that login is sucessful,
then disconnects without an error message.

I have been through the FreePPP FAQ and have not found the answer. Any help
would be appreciated.
