I was able to save a file on the desktop and copy it onto the network drive.
On examining the file with Get Info we discovered that
File size 7,790 byte
File is reported as taking up 2,291.3Mb on the disc by System 7.1
File is reported as taking up 64 k by System 7.5.3 (on other
machines on the network)
Win NT File Manager reported the file as taking up 7,790 bytes
I repeated this with Microsoft Word 5.1. Word did save a file onto the
network disc but also reported the file taking up more space than it
actually does (ie 5,632 byte, 2,223.9 Mb, 32k). I discovered that Macs
were reporting excessively large disc space for all files that we examined!
It appears that Claris Works (I haven't tried it with Hyperstudio but I
expect the same) gets the wrong message that the file is much larger than
the available disc space and won't save. The problem seems to be limited
to Windows-NT as our MacJanet fileserver doesn't give any problems. The
problem only seems to have arisen recently, since we had the latest NT
service packs installed and an extra 2Gb drive installed.
(A) Is this a known problem?
(B) Is there any way around it?
(C) Why does some software seems to refuse to save and other software doesn't
while the Operating system happily copies the files anyway?
Any light on these problems would be be welcome.
