I am not an authority, but I have a 7200 which requires Open Transport, and
have overcome similar problems. Here's what I found:

Open Transport is not compatable with MacTCP (the normal communication
control panel app). ConfigPPP ver 2.1.3 is compatable with OT, whereas some
of the more recent versions ie 2.2 are not. You might also need to change
some setting in TCP/IP, also in the control panel.

Compatablity is a real issue with OT, as it is a new, faster
communication/networking technology, which is not fully supported yet.
Your Type 11 error is a miscellaneous hardware exception error, or
incompatability problem, so your hunch is probably correct.
