** There could be binding of the head on the support rod. Try wiping it
off with a clean cloth and a little rubbing alcohol, then a few drops of
light weight oil, like sewing machine oil, or a drop of silicone lube.
I've seen this on dot matrix printers and it is sometimes caused by a
defective return switch. The print head prints bidirectionally and doesn't
"know" where the left (or right) end of the platen is because the switch is
worn or defective. Replace. **
