Specific Function vs. "Generic" Programs

Greetings all,

In reading the recent postings to this list, I have noticed lately
questions about applications that manipulate data, such as gradebooks
and weather statistics. I'm curious as to whether there are any
strong leanings on this list pro or con the use of specific programs
that do one thing, or the use of "generic" spreadsheets and databases.
Personally, I lean toward using the "generics" because IMHO they
encourage the use of the computer as a versatile tool; but I'm not
wedded to the idea. Any comments? BTW, this is not a research
question, just curiousity.
