** We have a LIbrary server and an instructional lab server connected to a
CD tower server, all on a Token ring PC novell network. We use On-Line
software to control the daisy chained 7 drive towers. The response time is
fine, multiple users no problem, that's what the server / software is
supposed to do.

BUT, the real problem for us is finding instructionally suitable CD
networkable titles that will actually run on the net. Sound output is
problematic with some titles and video run time rates are problems with
others. Many very nice titles are only available as lab packs.

LMC reference titles are a better choice; like SIRS, MAS, World Atlas etc.
The lack of CD network compatibility, however has caused us to install our
latest LC 5200 Mac ethernet lab with CDs in each workstation. How managing
all those individual CD works remains to be seen. How does one prevent them
from walking?

The tower eliminates that problem completely. Another network problem is
the installation of some of the titles, it can be a nighmare... or a ten
minute job. Using CDs within the workstation is a snap.

General consensus here, is that it is not worth the cost and the trouble
unless you are preparing for the future and security is an issue. ***
