Disk compression utilities don't solve the problem for long and with
machines as slow as LCIIIs you'd notice quite a slow down. One thing you
might try is spring cleaning. Often there are tons of files
(particularly in your system) that can be gotten rid of. Things like
printer drivers for printers you don't use, etc. Also, check through the
folders of all of your installed programs for files you might be able to
get rid of.
Next, consider buying one of the following:
1) Bigger hard drives. The price of internal hard drives keeps tumbling
and you can get quite a large drive for very little money these days.
APS (800-685-9327) has a Quantum 540MB internal for $189.95 and a
Quantum 849MB internal for $250. There are some smaller capacity drives
going for between $99 and $125 from various resellers. Shop around. Even
if you upgrade the drives in just a couple of machines at a time it may
be worth it in the long run. Especially if you plan to keep these
machines for the next couple of years.
2) Removeable media drives. Iomega's ZIP drive (~$199) and Syquest's
EZ-Drive (~$220) use inexpensive ($15-$20 each) removeable cartridges
(100MB and 135MB respectively). A couple of these drives and a handful
of cartridges would go a long way in providing larger capacity storage
for a few of your machines. And they can easily be moved from station to
station.
3) File server. If the same programs are installed on all of your
machines you should consider buying a file server and networking your
machines. That way you only need a decent sized hard drive for your
server (1 gig or more would be advisable) for file sharing and you could
get rid of the applications from your LCIIIs. With an efficiently
planned network your 80MB dribes could see a few more years of good use.

There is also a Zip drive -- the advantages are that you can move it
to any of your MACs and move software onto or off of your various
machines. The disks have a 100mb capacity and cost only $15 each.
The drive sells for $200.
