I appreciate the responses people have taken the time and realize that I
should have made a more complete description before posting the last
message.
The original harddisk in the PBook was in use when it failed and we were
unable to bring it up at all. Disktools, HD Setup, Disk First Aid, and
Norton Disk Doctor and Disk Editor. In all situations there was no
indication that any drive existed, but the computer did boot from any
start-up floppy we put in it.
The assumption was that the drive had crashed and it was replaced with a
brand new drive. The new drive gave the same symptoms and was subjected to
the same battery of software with the same result. Then an external drive
was attached, again with the same symptoms and the same response to the
software. In the mean time an unrelated desktop LC475 has started the same
line of baloney. Both of the machines are around 3 years old.
The SCSI id's on the drives were checked and ok. We will disconnect the new
internal drive and try the external again, along with adding SCSI Probe to
the DiskTools because at this point we must assume the new internal drive
might be a dud.
Sorry I didn't take the time with the previous message and hope you won't
give up on me. tim
