Help with USRobotics modem!

We recently purchased a USRobotics 14,4 Sportster modem to use with our
PowerMac 5200. We use the software that came with it, which is Mac Comm
Center or something like that. Terminal emulation is set to vt100, speed to
57000 as per the instructions (why is it that to function properly on a Mac,
the speed has to be set so high???)
We use a dial-up online service, NYLINK, which uses an entirely text-based
interface.
The trouble is this: when we access the Web, using Lynx, we get garbled
messages. Text from one screen flows into another, and after a few screens,
the text is unreadable. Oddly, a piece of html that I mailed to my account
appeared free of such errors. What's going on?
