Thanks to all those that responded with my "blinking question mark"
problem. It turned out to be a combination of things-isn't it always?
#1. The battery was shot.
#2 My para had connected a CDROM drive to the Mac LC II. Once I
disconnected the CD drive, all was okay, meaning I now could get to the
LC's drive-except now everything was in black and white. Thanks to this
list, I checked the date, and knew that the battery needed replacing.

Many thanks for all the great suggestions. You certainly saved me a lot of
frustration and time.
